Tunisia and Kenya teams fly with second victory, Algeria stars of the day

Blida, Algeria, July 15, 2007-: The host teams Algeria men and women were the stars of the second day of the volleyball competition of the ninth All Africa Games here at both Moustafa Tchaker and Lysee Sportif halls in Blida, Algeria on Sunday as they both achieved their second victory to lead their corresponding pools in the preliminary round. Tunisia and Kenya men and women teams achieved straight victories also in a day full of excitement and big spectators’ attendance.
In men’s competition, the defending champions the two big arc rivals Egypt and Tunisia achieved their second victory in a raw in the competition pool B in their way to secure the semifinal tickers of this pool. The defending champions, Egypt needed 69 minutes to clinch a straight sets victory over the last competition bronze medalists 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-19). Egypt used their well known opposite Ahmed Salah to spike from position 2 and came as the match scorer with 15 points equal to the Cameroon star Patrice Ndaki. The victory raised the win- loss ratio of the Egyptians to 2-0, while Cameroon dropped to 1-1.
Tunisia fought well against a strong opponent, Nigeria to bring their second victory 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-23). The Tunisian head coach Lotfi Slimane used most of his line up but of them the wing spikers Salem Mejri and Khalid Belaid were the superstars specially the first who was the match scorer with 15 points. The victory raised the Tunisian ratio also to 2-0, while Nigeria dropped to 0-2.
Senegal men played a collectively good match to achieve their first victory over Botswana 3-1 (25-23, 17-25, 25-23, 25-22). Senegal used their big gun Pape Ngom in spiking from all positions as he came as the match scorer with 15 points. Senegal also was superior in net action specially in block to improve their record to 1-1 in two matches. Botswana dropped to 0-2.
In pool A South Africa showed much improvement under the leadership of their experienced coach Al Wassimy than their first match as they swept Ghana 3-1 (25-21, 25-15, 21-25, 25-21). The experience dstar Freedom Chiya played a good match and came as his team scorer with 16 points. The winners secured their defense through their impermeable block of Gershon Rotich as well as the improved backline defense and controlled the attacks of Ghana to achieve their first victory that raised their score to 1-1 in 2 matches. Ghana dropped to 0-2.
Algeria aided by a big number of local spectators set their second victory in Pool A over the struggling Ghana 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-14). The host team went clear to the top of the pool with four points from 2 victories. Ghana dropped to 0-2 and came at the bottom of the pool.
Kenya followed the footsteps of their women counterparts for the second day in a raw. The team aiming to achieve the same crowns clinched a straight sets victory over Seychelles (25-22, 27-25, 25-20). The second set was the most exciting in the match specially when Seychelles improved their defense to oppose the Kenyan tall spikers. Kenya raised their ratio to 2-0, to come to the top of the pool with Algeria, while Seychelles dropped to 0-2.
In the women competition the Tunisian team continued their superior performance and ensured that they are coming to compete for a medal in the podium as they set their second victory in Pool B over Nigeria 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 16-25, 25-17). The Tunisian spiker Nihel El Ghoul came as the match star and scored 18 points. Although Nigeria did well and led by the professional star Esther Dusu who plays for African club champions Al Ahly of Egypt but they couldn’t stop the attacks of Nihel and her colleagues. Tunisia secured their position at the top of the pool with 4 points from 2-0 ratio while Nigeria dropped to 0-2.
In the same pool of death Kenya women the queens of African volleyball found it easy to achieve their second victory in a raw over Senegal 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-16). Senegal became 0-2. The Kenyan team used their well known efficient spikers Catherine Wanjiru and Docoras Ndasaba to control the match from the start till the end. The last African champions equalized Tunisia at the top of pool B with 4 points from 2-0 ratio.
Cameroon women reached their peak performance when they clinched a respected victory over the favorites Egypt 3-1 (25-23, 16-25, 26-24, 25-16) in pool B. the Cameroon team superstar Ondoua Messina came as the match scorer and with here 19 points she did a lot for her team. Engy El Shamy came as the Egyptian scorer with 16 points. Cameroon maintained themselves at the top of the pool with 4 points from 2-0, while the 2003 silver medalists Egypt dropped to 0-2 and left only a narrow window to qualify to the final 4.
Pool A showed the organizers Algeria playing their best to pull of a valuable victory over Ghana 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-13) in 59 minutes, using their big guns Faiza Tsabet and Lydia Oulmou and the big support of the home spectators. Faiza used her unstoppable spikes from all net positions and came as the match scorer with 20 points. The home team maintained their position at the top of pool A with 4 points from 2 victories while Ghana dropped to 0-2.
