Successful day for the Big forces


Blida, Algeria, July 14, 2007-: The big African volleyball forces Tunisia, Cameroon and Kenya and Algeria had a hundred percent successful day after they had achieved all victories in both men and women categories at the opening of the volleyball competition of the ninth All Africa Games here at both Moustafa Tchaker and Lysee Sportif halls in Blida, Algeria on Saturday. Egypt and South Africa had 1-1 record in both competitions which showed a thriller day full of action in both competition halls.

In Men’s competition, the defending champions Egypt clinched a difficult victory over Nigeria 3-1 (12-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-15) in a repeated final of the last competition in Abuja 2003. The Egyptian started with a poor performance to lose easily the first set before rebounding back to win three successive sets in Pool B

The organizers Algeria did the same against Seychelles in Pool A as they also came from one set behind to pull of a 3-1 victory (21-25, 25-14, 26-24, 25-15). The Algerian team which played with the full star studded line up brings up the victory using the support of their spectators.

Kenya defeated South Africa 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-23) in a strong match in pool A that showed progressive South African performance from set to set as they were nearer to win the third set. In the same pool Congo defeated Ghana 3-0 (27-25, 25-18, 25-19) using their dominance by the net using their better block.

Pool B showed also a classic victory for Tunisia over Botswana 3-1 (25-16, 19-25, 25-17, 25-17) where the loser showed good improvement in the second set to bring the draw 1-1 before losing two successive sets. Cameroon defeated Senegal in straight sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-17)

In the women’s competition Tunisia brings the biggest surprise in Pool B when they defeated the runner up of the last competition in straight sets 27-25, 25-14, 26-24. The Egyptian team appeared competitive in the first set which was won narrowly by Tunisia but the Tunisia girls appeared with a high performance thereafter to win the other two sets easier.

The organizers Algeria made it double victory in the opening when they promising women team defeated Ethiopia 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 25-11) in Pool A which showed also a thriller performance from the South African women who defeated Ghana 3-1 (22-25, 25-14, 25-17, 25-18).

Pool B featured also a great match as Kenya defeated Nigeria in an exciting five set match (23-25, 25-16, 26-24, 20-25, 15-12) which lasted more than two hours. Cameroon women followed the footsteps of their men counterparts as they had an important victory over Senegal 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 20-25, 25-20).

It is well known that Congo Women team withdrew from pool A women competition which will comprise only 5 teams.
