2007 Women’s World Championship

 Final Day

Gold medal for Italy. Italy, Brazil and U.S.A. qualified for Beijing Olympic Games

Tokyo, 16th November 2007 – The FIVB Women’s World Cup gold medal goes to Italy. For the first time ever, the Women’s team of “Azzurre” entered the World Cup podium and went straight through the highest step. Italy, Brazil and U.S.A, thanks to their gold, silver and bronze medals, got the first three berths for the Olympic Games. They will be, together with host country China, among the 12 teams that will compete from 9th to 23rd of August 2008 in Beijing. “The Women’s World Cup 2007 had a tremendous impact on the media” says the FIVB President, Dr. Rubén Acosta. “The host broadcaster Fuji Television for many matches had a market share exceeding 20%. The 66 matches were seen by more than 200,000 spectators in the venues here in Japan. And the gold medal winner Italy is a team which gives a strong example of our sport’s image: they show fair play, they are record-breakers with just two sets lost in this World Cup, and they are also outstanding athletes like the MVP Gioli, who came back on the court after becoming a mother”.

Italy and U.S.A. qualified for Beijing Olympic Games, Kenya lost the tenth match

Tokyo, 15th November 2007 – With an outstanding match, the first one ever played by Taismary Aguero against her former team Cuba, Italy got enough points in the FIVB Women’s World Cup 2007 to be the first team to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games. Then U.S.A. achieved the same goal in the next match played in Nagoya by beating Japan 3-0 on Thursday. The third and last Olympic slot will be determined as three key matches will decide the podium and the third berth for Beijing.

Kenya lost their tenth match in the competition in straight sets against Dominican Republic.

Brazil produced an outstanding performance to demolish Serbia 3-0 in the first match of the day at Nippon Gaishi Hall on Thursday. Clearly motivated by their heavy loss to Italy the previous day, the South American champions sent shell-shocked Serbia spinning to a straight-sets defeat, 25-13, 25-14, 25-21. With the win, 2006 World Championship silver medallists Brazil improved their World Cup record to 8-2. The Serbs, who won bronze at the 2006 World Championships in Osaka, dropped to 7-3. Serbia's last match is against four-time World Cup winners and reigning NORCECA champions Cuba on Friday afternoon. Brazil will play Asian champions Japan in the last match of the competition on Friday evening. The Head Coach Zoran Terzic said: “I do not know really what happened today. I must look at this game one more time, or two or three, to see what happened. Maybe we played very bad but I think today Brazil played very, very good, especially in defence; of course in the other elements, but especially in defence. I think our attack is not so bad, but today it was like a cat playing with a mouse.”

Dominican Republic earn second victory over Kenya

Nagoya, Japan, November 15, 2007 - The Dominican Republic picked up their second win of the World Cup with a steady 25-19, 25-16, 25-18 victory over Kenya at Komaki Park Arena on Thursday. By the tenth match and only one match ahead against Korea on Friday, the African champions are seeking a victory.

Bethania De La Cruz led the Dominicans with 20 points and was well supported by teammates Sidarka Nunez (15 points) and Cosiri Rodriguez (13). Kenya's leading scorer was as usual Dorcas Ndasaba with 11 points.

Kenya came into the game on the back of a close game against Thailand, when they came close to achieving their first win. Despite the five-set loss, they were happy to have won two sets and a happy Kenya usually performs well. Ndasaba improved her points total to 93 in that game.

The Dominican Republic were still searching for their second victory -- they've only beaten Thailand -- but also for enough consistency to dominate other teams. They have the big guns -- De La Cruz is the tournament's fourth-highest scorer -- but they need to fire on a regular basis to make an impression.
