2007 All Africa Games- Qualifications Zone 5, Day Three:

Kenya defeated Rwanda in a big Battle

Khartoum, Sudan, March 27, 2007-: Kenya Men’s volleyball team was the hero of the third day of Zone 5 qualifications after beating the strong Rwanda team to lead the qualifications with the organizers Sudan who had a rest day in the competition held at Khartoum, Sudan on Monday. Ethiopia achieved their first victory in three matches over Uganda. The winner of this qualification will secure a ticket in the finals of Men’s competition.

The Kenyan Men’s team having the hopes of achieving the double qualifications after their women counterparts already qualified last weak to the finals of the 9th All Africa games to be held in Alger, Algeria 11- 24 July 2007, achieved a difficult victory over the solid Rwandan team 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22) in about 90 minutes of thriller performance from both teams. Kenya was better in using the experience of the tall players in blocking and spiking and using some mistakes of the Rwandan defense.

On the other hand Ethiopia played their best match in the qualifications to clinch their first victory over Uganda 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-23) leaving Uganda struggling for a victory.

By the end of the competition third day Sudan and Kenya lead the table of the five nations one round robin tour with 4 points from two victories followed by Ethiopia 4 points from 1-2 win- loss ratio. The competition will feature 2 matches on Tuesday as Sudan meets Rwanda in a strong face of and Uganda players Kenya.

It is well known that the finals of All Africa Games will comprise 12 teams in each category which will be the seven champions of the zones, the best three ranked teams in the last competition in Abuja, Nigeria (Egypt, Cameroon and South Africa in Men; and Egypt, Kenya and Cameroon in Women) as well as the previous (Nigeria) and coming (Algeria) organizers.
