2007 All Africa Games- Alger,
Algeria: Qualifications:
RD Congo achieved double qualification with Cameroon Women
Kinshasa,
RD Congo, March 24, 2007-: Three more teams secured their
qualification tickets to the finals of volleyball competition at
the 9th All Africa Games following Zone 4 tournament for Men and
Women held at the RD Congo capital of Kinshasa 15-24 march. The
already qualified Cameroon women team through their ranking in
the previous competition in Abuja, Nigeria 2003 won the women
qualifications which featured 4 National teams followed by the
Congo RD team who came second and secured their ticket to the
finals as the zonal champions. In Men's competition Congo RD won
the qualifications which showed the participation of three teams
and secured the zonal ticket to the finals in Alger, Algeria 11-
23 July 2007.
In
the women category the competition was held in one round robin
format between four teams Cameroon, Congo RD, Congo Brazzaville
and Gabon, where the lions of Cameroon won their three matches
3-0 over Congo Brazzaville (25-16, 25-13, 25-16), 3-1 over Congo
RD (25-14, 25-22, 22-25, 25-19) and 3-0 over Gabon (25-11, 25-6,
25-22) to come at the top of the ranking with 6 points. Congo RD
came second with two victories over Gabon 3-0 (25-21, 25-11,
25-13) and Congo Brazzaville 3-0 (26-12, 25-23, 25-17) and
secured the second ticket for this zone in the finals. Congo
Brazzaville came third with four points and Gabon ended the
competition at the bottom of the table with three points.
The
Men's qualifications was held in a double round robin format
between the three teams Congo RD, Congo Brazzaville and Gabon
where RD Congo won the tournament with 7 points from three
victories and one defeat to clinch the only zonal ticket. The
winners defeated Congo Brazzaville two times 3-1 (25-22, 23-25,
25-20, 25-20) and 3-2 (23-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-20, 15-9) and had
a victory over Gabon 3-2 (25-23, 25-17, 23-25, 22-25, 15-11) and
a defeat against them 3-2 (14-25, 25-20, 27-25, 22-25, 15-12).
Congo Brazzaville came second with 6 points from a win/ loss
ratio of 2/2. Gabon ended at the bottom of the table with 5
points from 1/3 ratio.
It is well known that the finals of All Africa Games will
comprise 12 teams in each category which will be the seven
champions of the zones, the best three ranked teams in the last
competition in Abuja, Nigeria (Egypt, Cameroon and South Africa
Men; and Egypt, Kenya and Cameroon Women) as well as the
previous (Nigeria) and coming (Algeria) organizers.
