KCB crowned 2006 Sports Team of the Year in Kenya

Nairobi, Kenya, March 6- Once again volleyball family should be proud in Kenya after volleyball for the second year in a row the sports team of the year. The African Women Volleyball Club Championships title holders Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) have been crowned as 2006 Sports Team of the Year in Kenya after the National women team was crowned with the same prize in 2005.

The team which is currently coached by former national team Assistant Coach Paul Bitok beat a star studded field which included athletics and swimming to take the top position after judges considered their performance during the Club Championships held in Mauritius last year in which they beat Egyptian side Al Ahly in the finals after upsetting defending champions Kenya Pipeline in the semi finals.
Speaking after receiving the conveted trophy, Bitok said that was one of their greatest moments for the youthful team considering the fact that they were competing against athletics team which has been very consistent in Kenya.
“I feel so proud of my players for bringing glory to the team and KCB as a bank. I am at the same time so grateful to the management of KCB for the support which they have given the team over the years,” said Bitok who was flanked by the Team Manager David Kimosop who is also the President of Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) Nairobi Branch and Judith Odhiambo from KCB Corporate Affairs.
The youthful coach who had a professional stint in Tunisia during his playing days singled out former Telkom Kenya international Dorcas
Ndasaba who has since joined the banker’s squad, Salome Wanjala, Halima Bakari, Ednah Rotich and Jackline Baraza as some of the key players who have helped the team improve with support from other members of the team.
“After being crowned 2006 Sports Team of the Year in Kenya, this is a warning to our opponents that come the Club Championships this
year we are going to demolish our opponents mercilessly,” said Bitok who will soon be naming the KCB squad which will proceed to cam to prepare for the defense of the continental title.
On his part Kimosop who along with KCB Chairman Susan Mudhune have always turned up to cheer the team and give the girls
morale support whenever they are involved in major tournaments said as Team Manager he was so grateful to KCB Management for the financial and material support they have been giving the team.
“While KCB have managed to win 2006 Sports Team of the Year Award because of hard work and team work from the players and
members of the technical bench led by Bitok, I wish to point out that support from KCB management has also helped a great deal,” saidKimosop.
The KVF President Waithaka Kioni who was present during the occasion congratulated KCB for their achievement and challenged other clubs in the country to emulate the bankers who have performed beyond imagination despite the fact that the team is composed of young players.
Volleyball got recognition when Lydia Maiyo of Kenya Pipeline finished in 3rd position in the Most Promising Player category.
