Kenya and Uganda Share Uganda’s Beach volleyball Tour

Antebbe, Uganda, December 4-: The first ever-international beach volleyball tournament sponsored by Club Pilsener concluded on Sunday the 3rd at Lido Beach Resort Entebbe with Kenya and Uganda sharing Club cash while Rwanda could only manage to reach the quarter final stage in the women’s category. Rwandan ladies Denyse Mukarukundo and Aline Mutabazi were eliminated in the quarters by Kenya’s Eunice Maiyo with partner Doris Muyekho 12-21, 18-21
The two-day event attracted 4 teams from Rwanda, 4 teams from Kenya and 24 teams from the hosts Uganda.

Kenya’s Olympic national team captain Dorcas Ndasaba paired with Margaret Indakala outwitted Uganda’s seed one team of Sophy Nanyonga and Shilla Omuriwe in the women’s final winning in straight sets 21-14, 21-13 walking away with cash 250,000 each.

While in the men’s category another Kenya/Uganda affair saw Uganda’s Jeff Lwalanda and Lawrence Yakan stifle the determination of Kenya’s Patrick Owino and Jason Maina in the final also winning in straight sets 21-17, 21-18

In the semi finals stiff competition was exhibited when eventual winners Lwalanda/Yakan fought an onslaught from Uganda’s Luke Eittit / Amon Ainebyona in three long sets 21-18, 23-25, 22-20 while women’s runners up Nanyonga / Omuriwe survived an ambush from Kenya’s Eunice Maiyo / Doris Muyekho 21-15, 12-21, 16-14

Club Pilsener offered over 3 million shillings in awards including Cash and trophies to the best three teams in either category. Mr. Shem Semambo and Conrad Kizito represented the sponsor at the awards ceremony while National Chairman Kenya Beach volleyball Council Ms. Patricia Scott and Uganda Volleyball Federation President Mr. Nason Bwesigye presided over the closing ceremony.

Club Pilsener has pledged to even increase its package come next season, while Uganda’s national squad has landed an invitation to Mombasa Kenya in April 2007. The international tournament will be run every December and next year the federation will finalize application for recognition by the African Volleyball Confederation as an official regional qualifier tournament to world competitions. The international event closes the beach volleyball season this year and the next tournament will be in February 2007.
